Transcript: SpaceX is privately funded. As of May 2012, SpaceX had operated on total funding of approximately $1 billion in its first ten years of operation. In August 2012, NASA signed a $1.6 billion contract with SpaceX to fly 10 more cargo resupply missions to I.S.S. Facilities "About SpaceX." SpaceX. N.p., n.d. Grasshopper is being developed and tested in order to assist development of the reusable Falcon 9 and reusable Falcon Heavy rockets. SpaceX retired the first Grasshopper test vehicle—Grasshopper v1.0—after making a total of eight successful test flights between September 2012 and October 2013. As of November 2013, the F.A.A. permit to fly Grasshopper in Texas is open until October 2014. Dragon is a free flying vessel Was developed in 2012 Supplies the I.S.S. The Dragon spacecraft is intended to carry up to seven astronauts into orbit and beyond. Dragon was launched on its first operational Commercial Resupply Service (CRS) contract mission on 8 October 2012, and completed the mission successfully on 28 October. On May 2012, Dragon was successfully attached to the international spacecraft. The headquarter is located in Hawthorne, California. Their headquarter was formerly used to build 747s' fuselages. They have two launch facilities; one in Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida, and the other in Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. Has two rocket test facilities, the SpaceX Rocket Development and Test Facility in McGregor, Texas and a leased VTVL (vertical takeoff, vertical landing) test facility at Spaceport America in southern New Mexico. Transcript: Q. What were the names of the 4 rockets and spacecrafts that SpaceX invented? A. Falcon 1, Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy, and Dragon Spacecraft. Q. How many stages did the Falcon rockets have? A. 2 Stages Q. Where is SpaceX located? A. Hawthorne, California Q. Where did the Dragon Spacecraft bring supplies to? A. International Space Station Q. What is the range of the Falcon Rockets? A. low-Earth orbit The Falcon 1 rocket was successfully launched on March 23, 2006. It was invented by SpaceX and it was the first rocket that used liquid fuel and was privately funded. It was designed to be reliable, because they needed to be able to get their customers in space without failure. How the Falcon Rockets Work Falcon 1 Specs Weight - 27,670 kg (61,000 lb) Height - 21.3 m (70 ft) Fuel - LOX/RP-1 Range - Low-Earth orbit Stages - 2 It is a reusable spacecraft that was invented by SpaceX. The first successful flight was on December 8, 2010. The spacecraft was used to resupply the International Space Station. It was designed to be a free-flying spacecraft that could carry cargo or a crew. Questions and Answer Falcon Heavy Weight - 4,200 kg (9,260 lb) Height - 2.9 m (9.5 ft) Type of fuel - LOX Range - low-Earth orbit The Falcon 9 was successfully launched on June 4, 2010. It is larger then the Falcon 1, and was used to launch the Dragon spacecraft. The rocket was designed to be able to lift supplies to the International Space Station. Lasting Effect Falcon 9 Specs Dragon Spacecraft By: Ryan Huff and Tyler Webb The Falcon Heavy was designed to lift large structures such as satellites and other spacecrafts. It is planned to be launched in 2013, and is able to lift up to 53 metric tons (117,000 pounds). Also, the Falcon Heavy is cheaper than other heavy rockets such as the Delta IV Heavy. Falcon Heavy Specs SpaceX has shown how successful a private space company can be. They have built more cost effiecient rockets which allow for cheaper space travel. Also the satellites that they launched have helped in scientific research and space experiments. SpaceX Falcon 1 SpaceX is a private american space transportation company that created the Falcon 1, Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy Rockets, and they created the Dragon spacecraft. They designed these to be reuseable launch vehicles. SpaceX is located in Hawthorne, California. All of the Falcon rockets work in basically the same way, and each of them have two stages. In the first stage the rocket launches from sea-level using the engines at the end of the rocket. The rocket detaches from the lower engines in stage two and uses another engine to launch it farther. The initial engines give the rocket a large amount of thrust and then the loss of mass in stage two causes the rocket to be able to make it into space. Transcript: Who started SpaceX? Falcon 9 is a 2 stage rocket made by SpaceX. It is built to be a reliable spacecraft because it is responsible for the transportation of satellites and the job of putting the Dragon spacecraft into orbit. Falcon 9's accomplishments: In 2012 Falcon 9 made history when it put Dragon into the right orbit for the task of meeting up with the International Space Station. That made SpaceX the first commercial company to visit the ISS. On September 24, 2014 Falcon 9 made it's 13th successful flight. Falcon 9 Falcon Heavy Dragon When something is important enough, you do it even if the odds are not in your favor. ~ Elon Musk Chart comparing weights of other spacecrafts. Recent Events Check out their website! www.spacex.com Dragon is a free-flying rocket made by SpaceX. Free-flying means that it freely orbits in space. It is made to deliver cargo and people to orbiting destinations (such as the ISS). Dragon's accomplishments: Dragon made history in 2012 when it became the first commercial spacecraft in history to deliver cargo to the ISS and safely return cargo to Earth. On September 24, 2014 Dragon made it's 5th trip to the ISS. What is SpaceX? SpaceX's mission: "SpaceX designs, manufactures and launches advanced rockets and spacecraft. The company was founded in 2002 to revolutionize space technology, with the ultimate goal of enabling people to live on other planets." - SpaceX.com Elon Musk SpaceX barge in Pacific Ocean And don't forget that these rockets are REUSEABLE! Everytime they go up into space, they come back down. That is pretty incredible. Falcon Heavy Falcon 9 SpaceX What is Falcon Heavy? To complete your learning I recommend that you check out the website. Elon Musk is the CEO and CTO of SpaceX. He was born in South Africa. He got his first computer at age 10 and at age 12 he created his own computer game. He started his college education at Queens University, but he left and continued his education at Penn. He went to Stanford University with the hope of getting a PhD in energy physics, but two days later he dropped out and started his own company. Now he is a multimillionare and is known for SpaceX, PayPal, Tesla Motors, Hyperloop, Zip2 and Solar City. Dragon- First private spacecraft to visit the Space Station. January, 2015 - Google and Fidelity invest $1 million into SpaceX. December, 2014 - Spacecraft, Falcon 9 attempts landing on an ocean barge in the Pacific Ocean. October, 2014 - Spacecraft, Dragon completed NASA's assignment to resupply the International Space Station. September, 2014 - NASA selects SpaceX to be part of the Human Spaceflight Program. What is Falcon 9? Falcon 9 Dragon Falcon Heavy will be proven the strongest the spacecraft later this year if verything with takeoff works out. Falcon Heavy is able to lift into orbit while carrying 117,000 pounds. Falcon Heavy was designed to carry people into space and restore the possibility of people living on the Moon or Mars.
